Andrea Guarino-Slemmons ~
~ October 2-3, 2010!! ~
Master's Workshop

Master's Workshop with Andrea Guarino....
Andrea Guarino-Slemmons - has devoted her whole working life to the glass arts. Starting with stained glass while in her teens she felt the medium too constraining. Fused glass was her next choice but while using a torch to make odd shaped glass pieces and stringers to decorate her work she fell in love with lampworking. That was nineteen years ago and she has been making art glass beads full time ever since. The complexity of her beads has evolved with her experience and the availability of new tools, materials and colors. Andrea loves working with metal foils, leaf and various chemicals to create reactions in glass. Finding glass that reacts to create exciting new colors is a joy. Andrea makes a wide range of bead styles and sizes and is continually working on new designs. Lapidary equipment is used to create her special faceted beads. During the last several years Andrea has added silver work to her beads. This has included both PMC and sheet silver creations for earrings and bracelets. She shows her work in two or three major shows and teaches both in her state-of-the-art teaching studio in Port Townsend and in studios across the country. She has also taught in many foreign countries.

Advanced Level
Course $875.00

This advanced bead-making workshop will be about revealing the unexpected. It is about changing the appearance of Effetre (Moretti) glass. We will do this by applying metals such as silver leaf and silver foil to the bead as well as by fuming the beads with fine silver. We will also work on making and applying complex twisted glass canes and dichroic glass. We'll  also be applying various powders from Reichenbach, Gaffer, and Zimmerman and adding textures to bead with various brass stamps.

DATES:
Sat. & Sun. October 2nd & 3rd, 2010 (4 seats available)
TIME:
10:00 am to 6:00pm* (incl. lunch break)
*I have found that classes can run long dependent on many factors.  We may stop right at 6pm or we may not... it is always best to be prepared to stay later and not make plans right after class.  One to two hours buffer is usually good.
FEE:
$875.00 (all glass, supplies and specialized tools provided***)**
$437.50 due at registration, $437.50 balance due on August 15th.

REQUIREMENTS:

This is an advanced level class.  This student has considerable experience on a dual-fuel torch such as a Nortel minor or mega, or a Mini CC or similar torch. The student must be able to comfortably form and shape a variety of bead shapes with ease. In addition, the student should have a thorough understanding of how to keep and hold a form while decorating a bead. The student should also be able to make stringers and apply them in a consistent manner. Experience solely on a hot-head torch is not sufficient experience for this caliber of class.

This is not a beginners class. We do not recommend that beginners apply as the pace and curriculum of the class will be geared to the advanced lampworking student.

Must have reviewed the Glass Firenze Liability Waiver and "Class Policies" before registering, and agree to provide a signed liability waiver before start of class if one is not already on file.  Must be at least 18 years of age.

***
Notes on Specialized Tools:
Andrea uses several Jim Moore tools in this class.  She will bring some and I will provide a couple but to keep the cost of this class down people will be sharing these tools.  IF you have any of the following tools please bring them to the class with you (be sure to mark them).
    * Jim Moore Lentil and Cushion Presses
    * Jim Moore Stamps
    * Jim Moore D2 cup shear
    * Jim Moore Off Mandrel Tool

There are a couple of lesser cost tools for this class that will be provided for the class and available for purchase at the studio.

**Note on Mandrels and Bead Release:
I do my best to provide you with reliable bead release for classes.  We will be using 3/32" mandrels.  IF... you would like you may provide your own dipped mandrels with the release you prefer using.  If you do bring your own mandrels please let me know so we can keep things separate.  If you bring your own dipped mandrels and do not have success with them with these techniques, there will be studio dipped mandrels at your disposal.
